Much in the national papers today about flooding, including the size of senior EA executive pay, the chief’s absence on holiday in the West Indies, failures in flood defence planning, lack of protection for critical infrastructure, accusations about levels of flood defence spending and even recriminations about the Government’s commitment to the North!
Leaving aside these headlines we should reflect that flood handling has 3 distinct phases: preparedness, response and the recovery to a new normal. The last can be expected to last months if not years.
We can expect to hear a great deal about the “Pitt Report” which followed the 2007 floods. Now as then, there will be lessons identified but this time they must be translated into lessons learnt, funded and tackled with vigour.
