Military, Social History and Heritage

After a long military career, a lifetime interest in history and lifelong learning, Anthony Kimber PhD MSc:

–  leads parties annually to Northern France to consider battles of the First and Second World War. These are always tailored to look at specific individuals or groups. Most have considered battles which have involved Rye Servicemen.

– lectures on current military subjects, the Napoleonic period, the Boer War and the two World Wars.  Recent lectures have included the impacts of Napoleonic threats to England in the early 19c; the defence of Rye including the activities of the Home Guard; developments with Unattended Air Vehicles and Conventional Arms Control (after the Cold War).

– in his capacity as Chair of the Friends of St Mary’s Church, Rye, leads annual visits to consider the architecture and social history of  medieval churches around Romney Marsh.   The latest Newsletter provides details of events.

For every event, there is an information leaflet with maps.  These are available at small cost (by E Mail to this site) for those who want to lead their own tours. Recent activities have included:

2006:  Battlefield tour to Ypres. 2006 The Ypres Salient

2007:  Two battlefield tours to the Somme: one for  2007 LLoyds Bank Pensioners  and one for Rye RBL.

2008:  Battlefield tour to Artois postponed because of Chunnel Fire in September.

2009:  Battlefield tour  to Artois ; April 2009 delayed from September 2008, because of Chunnel Fire

2010:  Battlefield tour to Normandy Beaches.  2010 Visit to Normandy

2010:  Illustrated talk to the Romney Marsh Research Trust  on the impact of the Napoleonic threat to Romney Marsh.

2010:  During the time that he was Chair Rye Art Gallery Trust  ( 2004 – 2012), he made a presentation on the development of the Gallery at the annual meeting of the Social History Curators’ Group in Birmingham   , followed by article in the SHCG Journal  More for Less.   He commissioned an introductory video of the Gallery and later a third party business development study, which was also recorded as a  video.

2011:  Illustrated talk to the Etchingham Military and Aviation Preservation Group on the Napoleonic wars.
